Running survey

Thanks to Suzan at Welcome to the Nuthouse for this post topic! I know it’s a Running Sin to compare myself to others, but I like reading what others do and why, so let’s hear your responses!

1.  On average how many races do you run a year?

Last year I ran eleven races, from 5Ks to my first half marathon. So far this year I’ve completed seven–two 5Ks, two 10Ks, a 10-miler, and two half marathons. Tentatively I have four more on the schedule.

Not bad.

Not bad.

2.  Head accessories, things you have to run with:  a hat, a visor, sunglasses, chapstick, sunscreen, head band, ponytail, braids, sweat band?

Sunglasses are my #1 requirement. First, I can’t see without them, and second they hide a whole lot so maybe I won’t look like a zombie in race photos. I have long hair, so the Sweaty Band and three-band ponytail are required. It’s the only way. I wear a hat only if it’s raining or super-cold, neither of which happens frequently in Central Texas. I also carry chapstick in my water bottle’s pouch thing. Bluetooth headphones, my-phone-as-ipod, my Garmin, and my sweat towel round out the mandatory equipment list.

3.  Where do your workouts come from?  A training plan, a coach, whatever you feel like doing that day or what your training partner is doing that day?

I’ve been training with Rogue Running since last summer, and my training plans have come from Rogue coaches. Now I’m not training for anything specific and I’m recovering from some minor injuries, so I’m taking it easy and not following a plan.

4.  How many miles on average do you put on a pair of shoes?

I always have two pairs of shoes going so that when I rotate a new pair in, I still have a reliable but not-yet-ratty pair for a race or a long run. Last year was an experiment in footwear. I mostly trained in Mizuno Wave Riders, but then tried out the Newton Lady Isaacs for a while. I eased them in gradually, but I suspect the change contributed to my calf problem and I’ve gone back to the Mizunos.

Run streak, day eleven. Summer vacation, day one.

But that didn’t really answer the question, did it? The two pairs of Mizunos I’m using now, I got back in August/September. But I haven’t run in them continuously, and I haven’t tracked the mileage well. I’m expecting to rotate in a new pair this summer though.

5.  Cell phone=  do you bring it with you on your run or leave it at home?

Bring it with me. I use my Garmin to track mileage and pace, but I use my phone and bluetooth headphones to listen to music. I also, you know, take occasional pictures, especially on race day.

Pretty. Early.

Pretty. Early.

6.  What was your last running related injury or have you been an injury free runner?

What is this injury-free of which you speak?

I’ve had a problem with my left hip flexor since the fall of 2011. I’ve been to an orthopedist and had X-rays and an MRI. I’ve been to sports massage. And I’ve been to a sports chiropractor. The sports chiro seems to have mostly healed it, although every once in a while (like, for example, during my most recent half marathon…sigh) it flares up and hurts. Clearly it’s a moving target. Back in late March I started having pain in my left calf. Perhaps it was the Newtons, perhaps it was just months of training, I don’t know. It’s improving, though. The foam roller is my friend.

7.  Is your current running goal about running a farther distance (adding more mileage) or getting faster or BOTH?!?

Both, I guess. Well, I’m not taking on a new distance–no full marathon in my future! But I have a couple of longer races planned for the next six months, so I need to maintain some kind of 10-mile endurance for a while. But I’d also like to improve my speed–I’m very slow, and I’d like to see my average pace drop a bit along the way. It’s hard during the summer though. I may have to settle for solid summer training that will pay off with better speed in the fall.

8.  Speedwork—->  at the track, on the treadmill, on the roads or never do it?

When I train with Rogue, we do speedwork at the track. I like that, but I don’t always make myself do it on my own. I will do intervals in my neighborhood though. I need to do more of that, for sure. But I am weird and kind of like intervals/track training, so I don’t see it as a chore at all.

9.  Stretching after a run:  hit the ground after a run and get stretching, stretch in the shower, stretch once you get to work/school, skip the stretching?

I hate stretching. But I foam roll like a boss. Usually with a helper or two.

They see me rollin'...

They see me rollin’…

10.  What was your reason(S) for starting to run?

I started in 2011 with C25K, for reasons I really can’t articulate. I guess I was looking to improve my health and fitness levels. It was a slow process, but I have come a long way.

  1. 1. On average how many races do you run a year? About 4? Depends on my racing budget!

    2. Head accessories, things you have to run with: a hat, a visor, sunglasses, chapstick, sunscreen, head band, ponytail, braids, sweat band?
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, small wash cloth if it’s super hot

    3. Where do your workouts come from? A training plan, a coach, whatever you feel like doing that day or what your training partner is doing that day?
    Whatever I feel like doing

    4. How many miles on average do you put on a pair of shoes?
No idea but I switch out every 6 months roughly.

    5. Cell phone= do you bring it with you on your run or leave it at home?
Always bring. Has my music and I also use Run Keeper to track my mileage

    6. What was your last running related injury or have you been an injury free runner?
Plantar Fasciitis!! In fact, just recovered, took a running clinic, got new shoes and am ready to start running again!

    7. Is your current running goal about running a farther distance (adding more mileage) or getting faster or BOTH?!?
BOTH. I’d like to do a half marathon this year and increase my speed on shorter runs

    8. Speedwork—-> at the track, on the treadmill, on the roads or never do it?
Never do it but need to start.

    9. Stretching after a run: hit the ground after a run and get stretching, stretch in the shower, stretch once you get to work/school, skip the stretching?
Stretch before And after a run

    10. What was your reason(S) for starting to run? quick weight loss initially but then loved the races and I’ve met some great people along the way (both in real life and virtually! 🙂

  2. 1. None last year, probably 3 or 4 races this year. Historically less than 3 a year.
    2. Visor. Always. Unless it’s super cold and I’m wearing a toque.
    3. Random places on the internet usually. I read other peoples workouts, and sometimes modify them to fit my style.
    4. Lots! I used to demote them to lawn mowing shoes after 500 miles, but now I run in them until they are worn out. I recently retired a pair that’s probably got 1000+ miles, and am still using another pair that’s around 800.
    5. I bring my phone on longer runs, mostly for my wife’s peace of mind. I never take my phone on my lunch break runs – I don’t want work to interupt me!
    6. I’m not sure what my last injury was, but I’ve had almost every running injury. Have been essentially injury free for the last 18 months or so (changed my form and cross-train now).
    7. Faster. I’ve run a hundred miler, so I have no desire to add more distance. All about getting faster now!
    8. On the roads. I’d like to get to the track, but I have intervals programmed into my Garmin, and so it’s relatively easy to do 400m/800m repeats on any path.
    9. I never stretch. Not before, not after. I used to stretch a lot, and I also used to be injured a lot. Maybe related, maybe not. But I’m not fixing what isn’t broken!
    10. I started running to lose weight. Was not an active person growing up, but my health was dropping and I needed to make a change – so I started running 5 years ago and haven’t looked back!

  3. Hooray for fun surveys!!
I love that your animal photo bombed your stretching/foam rolling pic too. 🙂 my dog always assumes that it is time to lick my face when I foam roll or try to do any ab work.

    1. On average how many races do you run a year?
One to two. I’m cheap, and a SAHM. Once I go back to work, I’d love to do more.

    2. Head accessories, things you have to run with: a hat, a visor, sunglasses, chapstick, sunscreen, head band, ponytail, braids, sweat band?
ponytail, a DIY sweaty band if it’s windy. Always my phone as tracker/ipod/safety net

    3. Where do your workouts come from? A training plan, a coach, whatever you feel like doing that day or what your training partner is doing that day?
When training, I use Jeff Galloway

    4. How many miles on average do you put on a pair of shoes?
I put way too many on my first pairs.. my current pair has about 400, and I am starting teo notice.

    5. Cell phone= do you bring it with you on your run or leave it at home?
Yes, it comes with me. Mainly because it’s got my tracking app and my music, but mainly in case I were to get hurt, or some across someone who was.

    6. What was your last running related injury or have you been an injury free runner?
My hip flexor doesn’t love anything over 10 miles, but it’s doable. I had shin splints a lot at first, but those are better.

    7. Is your current running goal about running a farther distance (adding more mileage) or getting faster or BOTH?!?
I don’t really care if I ever run a double digit run ok. I just want to get faster.

    8. Speedwork—-> at the track, on the treadmill, on the roads or never do it?
I don’t do it, but I am going to start.

    9. Stretching after a run: hit the ground after a run and get stretching, stretch in the shower, stretch once you get to work/school, skip the stretching?
    I don’t stretch

    10. What was your reason(S) for starting to run?
I’m overweight, and running was the cheapest way to get going again.
